On February 24th, the integrated steel mill project of Mutún Steel, constructed under the EPC general contracting by Sinosteel Equipment & Engineering Co., Ltd. (abbr. Sinosteel MECC) and with the participation of Beijing Bestpower Intercontrol Co., Ltd.(abbr. BPI) , was officially completed. A grand completion ceremony was held at the project site.
As a result of the deep integration of the "Belt and Road" Initiative and Bolivia's natural resource industrialization strategy, Mutún Steel Complex is the first comprehensive steel mill in Bolivia. BPI has undertook the three power generation, ore selection, pelletizing, Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), public auxiliary, steel making, steel rolling and other seven sub-projects, as well as the design, complete sets, programming, debugging and other work of automation system. The full operation of this project marks Bolivia's official entry into a new era of independent steel production!
Reviewing the course of project construction, there were many difficulties and challenges.From volatile political situations, severe natural disasters to sudden global epidemics, every difficulty has tested the wisdom and perseverance of the project team. The BPI’s team faced up to challenges, maintained a high morale, not afraid of difficulties, and went all out. With rich experience in integrated steel plant projects, the team members worked in close coordination and execute tasks efficiently: The project management team oversaw the overall situation and made scientific decisions, provided a strong guarantee for the smooth progress of the project. The technical team strove for perfection and dared to innovate, offered high-level technical support for the project. The commissioning team was meticulous and paid attention to every detail, ensured the project was put into operation on schedule and smoothly. They interpreted responsibility and commitment through their actions and earned high praise from the general contractor and the client with their professionalism and enthusiasm.
Mutún Steel is scheduled to begin full operation in March 2025. It plans to produce 200,000 tons of steel annually, including key products such as rebar and steel mesh. It is expected to replace nearly 50% of steel imports, create 700 direct jobs, and more than 2,000 indirect jobs. It is projected to contribute $260 million to the economy of Bolivia.
